In my video I explained how inadequate breast feeding causes the muscles of the mouth, especially the tongue, to fail to develop properly which in turn leads to the bones of the mouth also failing to develop as they should, all of which means that the whole upper airway – mouth, sinuses, pharynx – ends up too small and crowded. And that is the main root cause of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) as well as Sleep Apnea (SA).
Now we’ve already talked about how to expand the arch and restore the room our tongues need, but guess what can happen after that. Unless we retrain and strengthen the muscles of the mouth to work properly, all our hard work will likely relapse. This is why Oral Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is such an integral part of wholistic functional sleep medicine.
Often OMT needs to be done in conjunction with a tongue tie release as well. These are often discovered when a baby fails to latch properly. But if left untreated can contribute to both restricted development and expansion relapse by interfering with our ability retrain the oral muscles.
